The design for the wildlife crossing Denkendorf is the first lightweight landscape bridge. Compared to conventional tunnel construction techniques this approach saves 90% material reducing not only the carbon footprint but also the costs.
Two cable nets are added on both sides of the existing 5m wide concrete bridge resulting in a 45m total width. The necessary double curvature for the lightweight structure is created by arcs and edge cables. The design neutralizes the barrier that the highway is for humans and animals and stands as a green gate to Stuttgart.
